My friend's mother final moment....just sharing

Mum’s Final Examination in This Life母亲生前最后一场考试
As my mum had gone through a tough life with her eldest son and my grandmother back in the homeland of China for many years, she was easily contented with a simple lifestyle in this country and in this town of Nibong Tebal. She always reminded us ‘to be thankful to the Heavenly Father and the Motherly Earth’ [谢天谢地] for what we had; three meals a day with a shelter to be dwelt in. She did not crave for material needs. She only aspired for spiritual uplifting without her own awareness. Her lifestyle was simple. She rarely bought or ate outside food. Whatever money she could save would be kept for praying purposes. Realizing the good intent and purpose of my mother, my eldest brother did not object to my mother’s religious practice. She was given a free hand to get money from the drawer at her whims to purchase items essential for praying. Her daily practice was the reciting of the sacred name of Kwan Yin[观音圣号] with beads as a means of recorder. When she had made up the number of one hundred and sixty thousand times the recitation of the sacred name of Kwan Yin, she would get my sister and me to help her fill up the one hundred and sixty dots with red ink on a sailing ship commonly known as ‘Buddha Ship’ [佛船] printed on a piece of yellow paper. We were very obliging to do it for her as we regarded it as a plaything to have fun with. Before the ship was set sailed to Western Paradise by means of burning it, she would make a wish as an attachment either for our financial condition to be improved or for the academic performance of her children to be excellent. Rarely would she make a wish for her own well being. On certain days of every lunar month she would observe strictly vegetarian diet. Sometimes we would join her just for a change of appetite.Whenever any of her children were to leave home for travel or for study elsewhere, he or she would be reminded by my mum to burn joss-sticks to acknowledge the deities and ancestors and at the same time to ask for their blessings.Though she was an illiterate, she was determined to learn by rote the recitation of a Kwan Yin Sutra [高王观世音经] from me and from my sister when I was at Standard 4 and my sister was at Standard 5. We were too happy and too willing to be her tutors as it was chance of a life time for us as kids to act as ‘teachers of somebody else’.During the last three years of her life, when I got my transfer back to Nibong Tebal, I did observe that every morning she would spend an hour or so kneeling in front of the altar of the Buddha statue on the upstairs of our house, reciting the Kwan Yin Sutra she learnt from us.Thrice a year her friends would join her in the pilgrimage to a Penang temple of Seong Woon Aum [祥云庵] during the special occasions of celebration in the name of Kuan Yin. Her friends would assemble at our house and collectively they would hire one or two taxis to Butterworth. From there they took a ferry across the sea to board a bus to the temple at Ayer Itam. This she did without fail for many years ever since we were small. As her children, we were very delighted to wait for her home coming after each pilgrimage as we anticipated many special things to eat, like various types of fruits, dumplings, vegetarian dishes, and so on.In the year 1983, she already made arrangements in anticipation of her upcoming death. After she had opted for cremation, she asked me to go to Beow Hiang Lim Temple[妙香林寺] at Air Hitam of Penang on July 9, 1983 to book an urn niche at a price of RM 2000 with her own money. She bought gold rings from the local pawnshop to be given to her children for their lifetime remembrance. In 1984, when she learnt of my booking of a house at Bukit Mertajam, she gave me one thousand ringgit Malaysia as part of the booking fee. After that she practically left nothing behind.Three months before her death, she was diagnosed by a doctor at Penang Adventist Hospital to suffer from leukemia. The doctor advised me to bring her home so that she might spend her last days in peace and dignity. Dr. Khoo Hock Lye of Khoo Clinic at Nibong Tebal was very kind indeed. He attended to my mum immediately on request to give her injection of morphine whenever she was having an acute pain. We were very thankful to him for his professional ethics.During her last days, I was told by my mum that she never had any unpleasant dream or illusion of any kind or ‘any uninvited visitors’ from the other world. This was a good indication that she was not disturbed by beings from other realms.Early in the morning of December 13, 1984, my mum enquired from my sister-in-law about the time at that instant. She was told that the time was approximately 4.00 am. Mum sounded that it was still too early then to telephone my sister and me. It could be that she wanted to inform us to be back with her before she departed. But on further query by my sister-in-law as to why she wanted to contact us, she said that there was nothing important to be mentioned. At around 5.00 am, prior to her demise, my two nieces and a nephew, namely, Phuay Yin, Phuay Sunn and Sip Hin respectively, gathered in front of the altar of Buddha which was about 25 feet away from my mum’s sickbed to recite continuously the sacred name of Amitabha Buddha[阿弥陀佛圣号] to transfer merits to their grandma. All the while my mum was lying on her bed. At around 6.00 am, she sat up on an arm chair by the side of her bed. Her grandchildren, sensing that the time was up for their grandma, instead of crying, continued to recite the sacred name of Amitabha Buddha in front of their grandma, while at the same time trying to conceal the grief of nearly losing their beloved grandma. Minutes before my mum passed away, she asked her grandson, Sip Hin, to burn joss-sticks to pray to the Buddha, the deities and the ancestors to make known to them that she was about to leave this world. It was with such a good grace and dignity that she departed this world. Hopefully with this nonstop recitation of the sacred name of Amitabha Buddha by my nephew and nieces, my mum would have set sail in a Buddha ship[佛船] to the other shore of Western Paradise. I felt terribly sorry for not be able to be at her bedside at that crucial moment of her departure when she needed me most. I am still deeply indebted to my nephew and nieces for their good karma in their handling and sending off my mum in the most professional way. Hope they will be blessed by their grandma with forever good fortune, good health and good luck. How well a person lives is determined not by how comfortable or luxurious he had lived through his life but by the relative ease with which he is leaving this world for the next.A perfect death which every Buddhist yearns for at the time of death includes the following criteria:a) can anticipate when to leave for the next world[预知时至].b) has no bodily suffering[身无病苦],c) has no attachment to worldly pleasure[心不贪恋],d) has a clarity of thoughts and conscious mind before death[意不颠倒],Death is the final examination of every person. Anybody who can die gracefully with all the criteria mentioned above will have a perfect score in the report card of his life’s final examination. In the case of my mum, though she was short of perfect score for having bodily suffering, I would say she had attained quite a good grade by what she had done in this life and how she left this world. Practically she had fulfilled most of the criteria mentioned. She had set a good example for most of us to emulate. I am proud to have her as my beloved mother. She was a common mother with uncommon deeds.

Perdana Menteri yang cemerlang, gemilang dan terbilang

Monday, 07 January 2008

Oleh Fudzail
“I do not know if I am a good leader, but I am a leader. And I have a vision. I look to the future, 20, 30 years. I learned that from my father, Sheikh Rashid. He was the true father of Dubai. I follow his example. He would rise early and go alone to watch what was happening on each of his projects. I do the same. I watch. I read faces. I take decisions and I move fast. Full throttle.”
- HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE, Ruler of Dubai

Corak kepimpinan hands-on menjadikan beliau amat digeruni.
If I had my child to raise all over again..

"If I had my child to raise all over again,
I'd build self-esteem first,and the house later.
I'd finger-paint more, and point the finger less.
I would do less correcting and more connecting.
I'd take my eyes off mywatch, and watch with my eyes.
I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.
I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.
I would run through more fieldsand gaze at more stars.
I'd do more hugging and less tugging." ~DianeLoomans, from

o For every single Hindu there are two Muslims 1 : 2
o For every Buddhist there are two Muslims 1 : 2
o For every Jew there are 107 Muslims 1 : 107
Yet the 14 million Jews are more powerful than the entire 1,500 million Muslims Why?
Here are some of the reasons.

Why are they powerful? So why are Muslims powerless? Here's another reason. We have lost the capacity to produce knowledge.
o In the entire Muslim World (57 Muslim Countries) there are only 500 universities. o In USA alone, 5,758 universities o In India alone, 8,407 universities o Not one university in the entire Islamic World features in the Top 500 Ranking Universities of the World o Literacy in the Christian World 90% o Literacy in the Muslim World 40% o 15 Christian majority-countries, literacy rate 100% o Muslim majority - countries, None o 98% in Christian countries completed primary o Only 50% in Muslim countries completed primary. o 40% in Christian countries attended university o In Muslim countries a dismal 2% attended. o Muslim majority countries have 230 scientists per one million Muslims o The USA has 5000 per million o The Christian world 1000 technicians per million. o Entire Arab World only 50 technicians per million. o
Muslim World spends on research/development 0.2% of GDP o Christian World spends 5 % of GDP
Conclusion.
The Muslim World lacks the capacity to produce knowledge Another way of testing the degree of knowledge is the degree of diffusing knowledge.
o Pakistan 23 daily newspapers per 1000 citizens o Singapore 460 per 1000 citizens. o In UK book titles per million is 2000 o In Egypt book titles per million is only 17
Conclusion.
Muslim World is failing to diffuse knowledge Applying Knowledge is another such test. o Exports of high tech products from Pakistan is 0.9% of its exports.. o In Saudi Arabia is 0.2% o Kuwait , Morocco and Algeria 0.3% o Singapore alone is 68%
Conclusion.
Muslim World is failing to apply knowledge. What do you conclude? No need to tell ...... the figures are speaking themselves very loudly we are unable to listen My Advice: Please educate yourself and your children. always promote education, don't compromise on it, don't ignore your children's slightest misguidance from education (and please, for God's Sake, don't use your personal contacts or sources to promote your children in their education; if they fail, letthem and make them learn to pass; b/c if they can't do it now, they can't ever). We are World's biggest and strongest nation, all we need is to identify and explore our ownselves. Our victory is with our knowledge, our creativity, our literacy...And nothing else. Please Muslims....Wake up... It’s not too late

The Japanese Legacy of Change

Doctor Shigeaki Hinohara JUDIT KAWAGUCHI
At the age of 97 years and 4 months, Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world's longest-serving physicians and educators. Hinohara's magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St.Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke's College of Nursing. After World War II, he envisioned a world-class hospital and college springing from the ruins of Tokyo; thanks to his pioneering spirit and business savvy, the doctor turned these institutions into the nation's top medical facility and nursing school. Today he serves as chairman of the board of trustees at both organizations. Always willing to try new things, he has published around 150 books since his 75th birthday, including one "Living Long, Living Good" that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself.
Energy comes from feeling good, not from eating well or sleeping a lot. We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults, too. Its best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime .All people who live long regardless of nationality, race or gender share one thing in common: None are overweight... For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat Always plan ahead. My schedule book is already full until 2014, with lectures and my usual hospital work. In 2016 I'll have some fun, though: I plan to attend the Tokyo Olympics! There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be a lot later than 65. The current retirement age was set at 65 half a century ago, when the average life-expectancy in Japan was 68 years and only 125 Japanese were over 100 years old. Today, Japanese women live to be around 86 and men 80, and we have 36,000 centenarians in our country. In 20 years we will have about 50,000 people over the age of 100... Share what you know. I give 150 lectures a year, some for 100elementary-school children, others for 4,500 business people. I usually speak for 60 to 90 minutes, standing, to stay strong. When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure. Contrary to popular belief, doctors can't cure everyone. So why cause unnecessary pain with surgery I think music and animal therapy can help more than most doctors imagine. To stay healthy, always take the stairs and carry your own stuff. I take two stairs at a time, to get my muscles moving. My inspiration is Robert Browning's poem "Abt Vogler." My father used to read it to me. It encourages us to make big art, not small scribbles. It says to try to draw a circle so huge that there is no way we can finish it while we are alive. All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is there in the distance. Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it. If a child has a toothache, and you start playing a game together, he or she immediately forgets the pain. Hospitals must cater to the basic need of patients: We all want to have fun. At St. Luke's we have music and animal therapies, and art classes.Don't be crazy about amassing material things. Remember: You don't know when your number is up, and you can't take it with you to the next place. Hospitals must be designed and prepared for major disasters, and they must accept every patient who appears at their doors. We designed St. Luke's so we can operate anywhere: in the basement, in the corridors, in the chapel. Most people thought I was crazy to prepare for a catastrophe, but on March 20, 1995, I was unfortunately proven right when members of the Aum Shinrikyu religious cult launched a terrorist attack in the Tokyo subway. We accepted 740 victims and in two hours figured out that it was sarin gas that had hit them. Sadly we lost one person, but we saved 739 lives. Science alone can't cure or help people. Science lumps us all together, but illness is individual. Each person is unique, and diseases are connected to their hearts. To know the illness and help people, we need liberal and visual arts, not just medical ones. Life is filled with incidents. On March 31, 1970, when I was 59 years old, I boarded the Yodogo, a flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and as Mount Fuji came into sight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. I spent the next four days handcuffed to my seat in 40-degree heat. As a doctor, I looked at it all as an experiment and was amazed at how the body slowed down in a crisis. Find a role model and aim to achieve even more than they could ever do. My father went to the United States in 1900 to study at DukeUniversity in North Carolina. He was a pioneer and one of my heroes. Later I found a few more life guides, and when I am stuck, I ask myself how they would deal with the problem. It's wonderful to live long. Until one is 60 years old, it is easy to work for one's family and to achieve one's goals. But in our later years, we should strive to contribute to society. Since the age of 65, I have worked as a volunteer. I still put in 18 hours seven days a week and love every minute of it.

A passing moment

A friend of mine opened his wife's ………….
underwear drawer and picked up a silk paper wrapped package:'This, - he said - isn't any ordinary package.' He unwrapped the box and stared at both the silk paper and the box.'She got this the first time we went to New York, 8 or 9 years ago. She has never put it on , was saving it for a special occasion.Well, I guess this is it.He got near the bed and placed the gift box next to the other clothing he was taking to the funeral house, his wife had just died. He turned to me and said: 'Never save something for a special occasion. Every day in your life is a special occasion'. I still think those words changed my life. Now I read more and clean less. I sit on the porch without worrying about anything. I spend more time with my family, and less at work. I understood that life should be a source of experience to be lived up to, not survived through. I no longer keep anything... I use crystal glasses every day... I'll wear new clothes to go to the supermarket, if I feel like it. I don't save my special perfume for special occasions; I use it whenever I want to. The words 'Someday...' and ' One Day...' are fading away from my dictionary. If it's worth seeing, listening or doing, I want to see, listen or do it now.... I don't know what my friend's wife would have done if she knew she wouldn't be there the next morning, this nobody can tell. I think she might have called her relatives and closest friends. She might call old friends to make peace over past quarrels. I'd like to think she would go out for Chinese, her favourite food. It's these small things that I would regret not doing, if I knew my time had come. Each day, each hour, each minute, is special. Live for today, for tomorrow is promised to no-one. If you got this, it's because someone cares for you and because, probably, there's someone you care about. If you're too busy to send this out to other people and you say to yourself that you will send it 'One of these days’, remember that 'One day' is far away... or might never come... No matter if you're superstitious or not, spend some time reading it. It holds useful messages for the soul.

What happens in heaven

WHAT HAPPENS IN HEAVEN
This is one of the nicest e-mails I have seen and is so true:
I dreamt that I went to Heaven and an angel was showing me around. We walked side-by-side inside a large workroom filled with angels. My angel guide stopped in front of the first section and said, 'This Is the Receiving Section. Here, all petitions to Allah said in prayer are received.' I looked around in this area, and it was terribly busy with so many angels sorting out petitions written on voluminous paper sheets and scraps from people all over the world. Then we moved on down a long corridor until we reached the second section. The angel then said to me, 'This is the Packaging and Delivery Section. Here, the graces and blessings the people asked for are processed and delivered to the living persons who asked for them.'I noticed again how busy it was there. There were many angels working hard at that station, since so many blessings had been requested and were being packaged for delivery to Earth Finally at the farthest end of the long corridor we stopped at the Door of a very small station To my great surprise, only one angel was Seated there, idly doing nothing. 'This is the Acknowledgment Section,' My angel friend quietly admitted to me. He seemed embarrassed 'How Is it that there is no work going on here?' I asked. 'So sad,' the angel sighed. 'After people receive the blessings that they asked For, very few send back acknowledgments.' 'How does one acknowledge Allah's blessings?' I asked. 'Simple,' the angel answered. Just say, 'Thank you, Allah.' 'What blessings should they acknowledge?' I asked. 'If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish, you are among the top 8% of the worlds wealthy.' 'And if you get this on your own computer, you are part of the 1% in the world who has that opportunity.' Also ..... ' If you woke up this morning with more health than illness ... You are more blessed than the many who will not even survive this day .' 'If you have never experienced the fear in battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation. You are ahead of 700 million people in the world.' 'If you can attend a Mosque without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death you are envied by, and more blessed than, three billion people in the world.' 'If your parents are still alive and still married ...you are very rare.' 'If you can hold your head up and smile, you are not the norm, you're unique to all those in doubt and despair.' Ok, what now? How can I start? Have a good day, count your blessings, and if you want, pass this along to remind everyone else how blessed we all are.

Secebis kasih sayang

Secebis Kasih Sayang.
"Siapa ambil duit ayah?" tanya ayah bagai singa lapar.
Aku langsung tidak berdaya menentang renungan tajam mata ayah. Kedua-dua kami membisu, cuma tunduk memandang lantai.
"Baik, kalau tak mengaku,dua-dua ayah rotan!" sambung ayah sambil mengangkat tangan untuk melepaskan pukulan sulungnya ke belakang aku.
Tiba-tiba, adik menangkap tangan ayah dengan kedua-dua belah tangannya sambil berkata, "Saya yang ambil!"
Belum sempat adik menarik nafas selepas mengungkapkan kata-kata itu, hayunan dan balunan silih berganti menghentam tubuh adik. Aku gamam, lidah kelu untuk bersuara. Walau perit menahan sakit, setitis pun airmata adik tak tumpah.
Tahun bersilih ganti, peristiwa adik dibelasah kerana mempertahankan aku bagaikan baru semalam berlaku.
Aku terdengar ayah berkata,
"Zah, kedua-dua anak kita cemerlang dalam pelajaran. Abang bangga sekali!"
"Tapi apalah maknanya bang…!" aku terdengar ibu teresak-esak.
"Dimana kita nak cari duit membiayai mereka?"
"Orang lelaki kena bersekolah.
"Pemuda kampung?" bisikku. "Siapa?"
Tergesa-gesa aku keluar bilik.
Sambil tersenyum dia menjawab, "Akak lihatlah pakaian adik ni.
Jantungku terasa berhenti berdenyut mendengarkan jawapannya. Aku cukup tersentuh.
Aku kaku.
"Emak, tak payahlah kerja teruk-teruk bersihkan rumah sambut saya balik."
"Adik kamu yang bersihkan. Dia pulang kelmarin. Habis tangannya luka-luka."
Aku menerpa ke biliknya. Cantik senyum adik. Kami berdakapan.
Apalagi…aku menangis seperti selalu.
Aku berkahwin pada usia menginjak 27 tahun. Suamiku seorang usahawan menawarkan jawatan pengurus kepada adik.
"Kalau adik terima jawatan tu, apa kata orang lain?" kata adik.
"Adik takde pelajaran.
"Kenapa sebut kisah lama, kak?" katanya ringkas, cuba menyembunyikan kesedihannya.
Suatu hari tapak kasut saya tertanggal.

Stand by me

Stand by me

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid, no I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
And darlin', darlin', stand by me, oh now now
Stand by me , Stand by me, Stand by me
If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
And the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won't cry, I won't cry, no I won't shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
And darlin', darlin', stand by me, oh stand by me
Stand by me, stand by me, stand by me-e, yeah
Whenever you're in trouble won't you
stand by me, oh now now stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me
Darlin', darlin', stand by me-e, stand by me
Oh stand by me, stand by me, stand by me

A Japanese Lesson

The Japanese have always loved fresh fish. But the water close to Japan hasnot held many fish for decades. So to feed the Japanese population, fishingboats got bigger and went further than ever. The further the fishermenwent, the longer it took to bring the fish. If the return trip took moretime, the fish were not fresh. To solve this problem, fish companiesinstalled freezers on their boats. They would catch the fish and freezethem at sea. Freezers allowed the boats to go further and stay longer. However, the Japanese could taste the difference between fresh and frozenfish. And they did not like the taste of frozen fish. The frozen fishbrought a lower price. So, fishing companies installed fish tanks. Theywould catch the fish and stuff them in the tanks, fin to fin. After alittle thrashing around, they were tired, dull, and lost their fresh-fishtaste. The fishing industry faced an impending crisis! But today, they getfresh-tasting fish to Japan. How did they manage? To keep the fish tasting fresh, the Japanese fishingcompanies still put the fish in the tanks but with a small shark. The fishare challenged and hence are constantly on the move. The challenge theyface keeps them alive and fresh!Have you realized that some of us are also living in a pond but most of thetime tired and dull?Basically in our lives, sharks are new challenges to keep us active. If youare steadily conquering challenges, you are happy. Your challenges keep youenergized.Don't create success and revel in it in a state of inertia. You have theresources, skills and abilities to make a difference. Put a shark in yourtank and see how far you can really go!'Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character' - Albert Einstein
