Being A Leader

Be a Leader
The following was written by a high school student writing an essay for her final exam:
"A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent. In the end, leaders are much like eagles... they don't flock, you find them one at a time." Hard work, profound dedication, and encouragement toward others are what entitle an individual to be a leader.
A strong work ethic is one important quality of an adroit leader. As the saying goes: "There are always two choices, two paths to take. One is easy. And its only reward is that it's easy." Hard work and intense dedication can only make you better, both mentally and skillfully. If others see one person working as hard as they can 100% of the time, they will work harder for that one person. No matter how unmotivated people are, if just one person steps up and takes the lead, everybody else will follow. Leaders motivate others.
Many people find themselves working harder when they know that they get something out of it. Just by hearing a few pushing words that motivate and encourage, people force themselves to work harder. Leaders are usually the ones who ignore their own accomplishments to commend others for theirs. The leader keeps everybody's head up at all times, as they work harder and harder, and more diligently toward their goals. The number one thing that a leader tries to avoid is making people feel guilty or to look down on them because leaders bring others higher in the world, usually with the result being success. As a noble person once said, "There are high spots in all of our lives, and most of them come through encouragement from someone else."
Hard work from one person makes other work harder. Vehement dedication shows others the success that comes through it. Encouragement and support for others make others feel good about them and give them something else to work for. These are all very significant traits that a leader must possess. Don't wait around for things to happen, make this world what you really want it to be, be a leader.

Don’t Rest On Laurel
One day a field marshal requested an audience with Napoleon, and Napoleon knew what was coming. But as every good leader must, Napoleon agreed to hear him out. The field marshal brought news of a great victory he had achieved. He talked for a long time about his accomplishment, piling detail upon detail.
Napoleon listened closely throughtout the entire narration, but said nothing. The officer was disappointed. He had hoped for a more enthusiastic reception, as well as Napoleon's congratulations. Neither was forthcoming.
Summing up, the marshal repeated much of what he had already stated. As the officer rambled on, Napoleon continued to listen politely, and the marshal interpreted this as encouragement. Surely, he thought, Napoleon will now give me the praise I so richly deserve.
When the marshal finally stopped talking, Napoleon asked him one question: "What did you do the next day?"
The field marshal was speechless. But the lesson was not lost on him. From then on, the officer understood that he should never rest on his laurels. So he left it to others to bestow the praise.

A Leader’s Impact
In September of 1862, the civil war tilted decisively in favor of the south. The morale of the northern army dipped to its lowest point of the war. Large numbers of Union troops were in full retreat in Virginia. Northern leaders began to fear the worst. They saw no way to reverse the situation and turn the beaten, exhausted troops into a useful army again.
There was only one general with the ability to work such a miracle. That was General George McClellan. He had trained the men for combat and they admired him. But neither the war department nor the rest of the cabinet members saw this connection. Only president Abraham Lincoln recognized Gen. McLellan's leadership skills.
Fortunately, Lincoln ignored the protests of his advisors and reinstated McClellan back in command. He told the general to go down to Virginia and give those soldiers something no other man on earth could give them: enthusiasm, strength and hope. McClellan accepted the command. He mounted his great black horse and cantered down the dusty Virginia roads.
What happened next is hard to describe. Northern leaders couldn't explain it. Union soldier couldn't explain it either. Even McLellan couldn't quite explain what happened. Gen. McClellan met the retreating Union columns, waved his cap in the air and shouted words of encouragement. When the worn out men saw their beloved teacher and leader, they began to take heart once again. They were moved with an unshakeble felling that now things could be different, that finally things could be all right again.
Bruce Catton, the great civil war historian, describes this excitement that grew when word spread that McClellan was back in command. "Down mile after mile of Virginia roads the stumbling column came alive. Men threw their caps and knapsacks into the air, and yelled until they could yell no more... because they saw this dapper little rider outlined agains the purple starlight.
"And this, in a way, was the turning point of the war. ... No one could ever quite explain how it happened. But whatever it was, it gave President Lincoln and the north what was needed. And history was forever changed because of it."
The story of Gen. McClellan illustrates dramatically the impact a leader can have on the human spirit.

A True Leader
A few years ago, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, where I was employed, purchased Norand Corporation. Pioneer's sales representatives in the field used Norand hand-held terminals to upload daily sales information and download new price and sales incentive information. Pioneer bought so many of these hand-held terminals, the economics made the purchase of Norand look interesting. Owning Norand also allowed Pioneer to explore high-technology markets outside agriculture.
But after a few years, the emerging laptop PC technology made the hand-held units obsolete. Pioneer sold Norand at a loss. Pioneer always took a given percent of the annual profits to divide equally among all employees, so our profit-sharing checks were lower than if Pioneer had not purchased Norand. Additionally, my Pioneer stock was lower than it had been before the purchase of Norand. I was not pleased.
The CEO of Pioneer, Tom Urban, made annual formal visits to each of the Pioneer divisions to talk about the state of the business and to listen to employees' concerns. When he walked into the meeting room for his first visit after the sale of Norand, he acknowledged the group, removed his jacket and neatly folded it across the back of the chair. He loosened his tie, undid his collar and rolled up his sleeves. The next thing he said was the last thing I ever expected to hear a CEO say.
He said, "I made a mistake buying Norand and I am sorry. I am sorry your profit-sharing was lower because of the purchase, and I am sorry your stock was hurt by the purchase. I will continue to take risks, but I am a bit smarter now, and I will work harder for you." The room was quiet for a moment before he asked for questions.
A great man and leader stood before us that day. As I sat listening to him, I knew I could trust him, and that he deserved every bit of loyalty I could give to him and to Pioneer. I also knew I could take risks in my own job.
In the brief moment of silence before the questions started, I recall thinking that I would follow him into any battle.

How to Inspire People like Obama Does>
Public speaking skills are critical to the success of every leader.
Here are four techniques you can borrow from the Presidential candidate by Carmine Gallo. Over the past several years, I have been interviewing, observing, and writing about business, academic, and political leaders who have the ability to influence their audience—leaders who fire up the rest of us. Senator Barack Obama now President Obama (D-Ill.) is one of them. For a look at what makes Obama's public speaking skills so effective, I outline four techniques he's mastered and explain ways to use them in your own repertoire.
Hold Out Hope
Like Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan, Obama speaks in the uplifting rhetoric of hope. After his defeat in New Hampshire, Obama's political oratory was so hopeful he sounded more like a winner than a runner-up. Obama knew a hopeful message would embolden his supporters. In a speech on Jan. 8, 2008, Obama said, "We know the battle ahead will be long. But always remember, no matter what obstacles stand in our way, nothing can stand in the way of the power of millions of voices calling for change… We have been warned against offering the people of this nation false hope. But in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope."You are the leader people want to believe in. Your customers and employees are bombarded by bad news—the credit crunch, a housing slump, an economic slowdown—but they are eager to hear something positive. That doesn't mean leaders stick their heads in the sand—far from it. Inspiring leaders acknowledge the situation but also remind people of reasons to be optimistic.
Use Rhetorical Devices
Many observers say Obama sounds like King. He does because he uses some of the same techniques that made King an electrifying speaker.
1. Parallel structure.
We can thank the ancient Greeks for this rhetorical tool—they called it "anaphora." It simply means repeating the same word or expression at the beginning of successive sentences or phrases. One of the most famous examples is King's "I Have a Dream" speech. "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed…. I have a dream that… I have a dream…" Obama uses the same device frequently. In his Iowa victory speech on Jan. 3, Obama said, "You have done what the cynics said we couldn't do. You have done what the state of New Hampshire can do in five days. You have done what America can do in this New Year."Anaphora's sister technique is called "epistrophe." It is the repetition of a word or expression at the end of a successive sentences or phrases. For example, in Obama's New Hampshire speech, the expression "Yes, we can" rallied thousands of supporters when used like this: "It was a creed written into the founding documents that declared the destiny of a nation: Yes, we can. It was whispered by slaves and abolitionists as they blazed a trail towards freedom through the darkest of nights: Yes, we can. It was sung by immigrants as they struck out for distant shores and pioneers who pushed westward against an unforgiving wilderness: Yes, we can.
2. Alliteration.
Both Kennedy and King were fond of this device that strings together words that start with similar sounds. At the 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote speech that brought Obama to prominence, he said, "Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or do we participate in a politics of hope?" In 2005, during a commencement speech at Knox College, Obama described America as "a place where destiny was not a destination, but a journey to be shared and shaped…" When speaking at the Woodrow Wilson Center for Scholars in August, 2006, Obama proclaimed, "The history of America is one of tragedy turned into triumph." In January's New Hampshire speech, Obama used alliteration again: "We have been told we cannot do this by a chorus of cynics."
3. Rich Imagery
Persuasive speakers have long understood the power of imagery to stir emotions—the creation of mental pictures through the words. In his 2004 speech, Obama described what he meant by the audacity of hope: "It's the hope of slaves sitting around a fire singing freedom songs, the hope of immigrants setting out for distant shores, the hope of a young naval lieutenant bravely patrolling the Mekong Delta, the hope of a millworker's son who dares to defy the odds, the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too."Exude Confident Body Language
In debates Obama appears unflappable, answering tough questions while maintaining strong eye contact. He doesn't fidget or shake his head when listening to sharp attacks from his opponents. While seated, he leans slightly forward. People will make an impression of you after only a few seconds. Pay attention to what your body is saying (BusinessWeek.com, 4/30/07). Communicate confidence, competence, and control.
Use Dynamic Vocal Delivery
A monotonous speaking style lulls the listener to sleep, regardless of the power of the content. Obama knows how to enhance (BusinessWeek.com, 5/16/06) his delivery.
Consider these three aspects of his delivery.
1. Pacing.
Obama varies the speed at which he speaks. Very few sentences are delivered at exactly the same pace.
2. Volume.
In his victory speech after the Iowa caucuses, Obama raised the volume of his speech with each sentence in the following paragraph: "We are one nation. We are one people. And our time for change has come."
3. Pauses.
Nothing is as dramatic as a well-placed pause, and Obama knows it. He pauses at key moments to make a memorable impact.Obama connects with millions of people thanks to his public speaking skills.

Mr. Juseleeno, born in 1960(reportedly still alive in 2008), is a Brazilian who has made many predictions, and MOST have come to pass, including Princess Diana's death by car accident (which is instigated by someone near her and will probably unfortunately be written off as a car accident), 911 and the 2004 Indonesian tsunami. He sees the future in his dreams, and has an average of 3 to 9 such predictions per day. When he wakes up, he will write them down, and send warnings to those concerned.If it concerns only a normal individual, he will write a letter to warn him/her. If it is a famous person(celebrity, politician etc.), or matters concerning the public, he will not only send it to the individual himself/herself, but also related agencies, government, and media. He urged the media to publicise these predictions, but the reply always went along the lines of rejection for fear of arousing public panic.

2008, July: There will be an earthquake in Japan, which will cause a tsunami of 30 plus metres high to occur as well.
2008, 18th September: An earthquake with magnitude of approximately 9.1 will rock China, simultaneously causing a tsunami of more than 30 metres to occur, resulting in the deaths of more than 1 million people.Although this huge earthquake will happen after the Olympics have ended, there will be a series of relatively smaller earthquakes occurring in China before the huge earthquake. The China government, which is more concerned with the success of the Olympics, will most likely neglect to employ appropriate cautionary measures, thus the high casualty rate. If the China government does not publicise the occurrence of these minor earthquakes and evacuate people, the number of deaths will be as predicted.
2008, 17th December: terrorist attack in America
2010: The temperatures in some countries of Africa could be as high as 58 degrees Celsius, and there will be a serious shortage of water.
2010, 15th June: The New York Stock Exchange market will fail, causing an international financial crisis.
2011: The research on the treatment of some cancers will be completed, but a new life-threatening virus will appear. People who are infected will die after only approx. 4 hours of coming into contact with the virus.
2013, 1st - 25th November: Research on treatment of cancers, except for brain tumors, will be completed. An earthquake, caused by volcanic eruptions, will happen on Bahama Island of the Canary Islands. A gigantic tsunami of roughly 150 metres will result. America mainlands, Brazil etc.will be affected, with the tsunami pushing into the land as far as 15 to 20 kilometres. Before the occurrence of this gigantic tsunami, the sea/ocean water levels will sink by about 6 metres, and large flocks of birds will start to migrate.
2014: A small planet that has been gradually closing in on Earth might eventually collide with Earth, and this collision, if come to pass, will affect the survival of humans as a whole.
2015: By the mid of November, the average temperature of Earth could be as high as 59 degrees Celsius. Many people will die from the overheat, and international confusion and terror ensues.
2016, April: A huge typhoon will invade China, causing massive damage. The 43rd USA president, George Walker Bush, will enter the hospital, and faces a life or death situation.2026, July: A super earthquake will occur in Sans Francisco, and it will be named "The Big One". Huge damage to surrounding areas. Many volcanoes will re-activate, and the height of resulting tsunami will be more than 150 metres.
Mr. Juseleeno made known his predictions in hopes that people will take heed of his warnings, so that these disasters may be avoided. He hopes there will be a major change in the thinking of people's mindsets in the time period 2007 - 2008. One factor will be the environmental issue of global warming, which is more serious than what some meteorologists assume.
Recession is coming ... make your own judgment, don't panic!! Do what is wise. The recession looks very eminent. It is really time to take pro active steps to avoid a painful time in the next two years which is how long the recession is expected to last.
Suggestions:
1. Don't take any loans, buy homes, properties with loans, or even cash. Keep as much cash as possible.
2. Pay off as much of personal loans, private loans, as debt collection will be hastened.
3. Sell any stocks you can even at lower prices.
4. Take money off from Trust Funds.
5. Don't believe in huge sales forecast from customers, be extremely prudent, lowest inventories, reduce liabilities.
6. Don't invest in new capital.
7. If you are selling homes/ properties/ cars , do it now, when you can get good prices, they are going to fall.
8. Don't invest in new business proposals.
9. Cancel holiday plans using credit cards.
10. Don't change jobs, as companies will retrench based on 'last in first out'.
Stay cool, wait, and if you took all of the above actions and more, you probably will be better off than many. This is not a rumour. Bear Stearns is the first of many banking and financial institutions that will start falling in the not too future. If Bear Stearns can fall, so can JP Morgan, Citibank, HSBC, and the whole world. US economy falls, the rest will crumble. India and all those self economies will be the most protected, but not gullible. Europe may be a little stronger, but not China, another giant! Malaysia will see significant impact.

Floral Arrangement







Dome
As the name suggests, a dome arrangement is round. The container used for this type of arrangement is best medium in height. The dome arrangement is an all-round arrangement with the same distribution of flowers all around. Unlike the classic dome arrangement, the dome interpretive arrangement looks more stylish. It is not exactly rounded and there are less flowers but more lines and space. This arrangement has more design element and is one of my favourites.
1. How to Make a Dome Arrangement
A dome arrangement is the simplest form of arrangement. It is very easy to make. Here, I will show you how to make this very basic type of arrangement. A dome is a round arrangement. I'm going to use pink carnations, tea leaves and yellow peacock.First; I'm going to prepare a container. The container used for this arrangement is usually low and shallow. I soaked a 1/3 of floral foam and insert it into the container. Leave around 1 cm of foam above the container. Now, we can start inserting the flowers. But before we do, let's understand the dome diagram below.
All the A, B and FP will be used up by carnations. Here is a simple calculation for what A, B and FP be like.
A = B = container height + foam height above the containerFP (Focal Point) = container height + foam height above the container + 1 inch
Now, you can start inserting the flowers. Choose the bigger bloomed flowers to be around the focal point area. After you've inserted all the A's and B's, insert the remaining carnations (if you have any) into the empty spaces. At this point, make sure that the shape of arrangement is round and not one flower is jutting out of the round shape. To cover the floral foam, cut the tea leaves in short lengths and insert them into the foam.
When the foam is covered, cut the yellow peacock into short lengths and insert them into the empty spaces. Now, your dome arrangement is ready.
You can place your dome arrangement in your living room to decorate it.
A Dome Interpretive Arrangement
A dome interpretive arrangement is different from the classical dome arrangement. Although the shape of the dome is maintained but less flowers is introduced in a dome interpretive arrangement. I have always liked this arrangement because it is simple but very stylish. And it can be used to decorate any room. With fewer flowers, more lines and space is introduced in this arrangement. Another very obvious point of difference between the classical and the interpretive is that the interpretive is always assymmetrical. It is a 360 degrees arrangement but the materials you see and the proportion of the materials distributed in the arrangement is different at every angle. Now, let me introduce to you the materials I'm going to use to make a dome interpretive arrangement.

As always, we need to prepare the container first. Soak a block of foam in clean water. Make sure thefoam fully absorbed the water. Insert the foam into the container, leaving about 1cm of height above the container. Next, insert the pre-shaped rattan into the foam. The rattan is made of many pieces of rattan tied together with copper wire. You can shape it as however you like but here I made oval loops so that it fits the dome arrangement. When we insert the rattan, we actually introduced lines in the arrangement. Then, insert the fatsia leaf at the side of the foam. After that, insert the song leaves at the other side of the foam. Since we inserted the big fatsia leaf at one side, we introduced quite of lot 'green' there.So, the song leaves is best placed opposite the fatsia leaf.When the leaves are in, take about 6 stalks of barbie pink roses and cut them short.Insert them near the fatsia leaf using the grouping method.Now, insert the cream eustoma. The eustoma stems are very fragile so you need to handle them gently. Insert them near the pink roses.Now it's time to cover the foam with leaves. Handy Tip! To fully utilize the materials, you need not use ferns to cover the foam. You can use the leaves of the red berries. Cut the berries leaves shortly and insert them into the foam to cover it.Then, you can insert the berries. Don't insert them near the pink roses because the colours are heavy there. So now you have an arrangement with beautiful lines, the form is maintained, good colour combination, good texture and good usage of space.This makes a good flower arrangement.
Crescent
A curve arrangement is quite difficult to make because it is assymmetrical. The proportion must be balanced from whichever angle you look at. The weight must be balanced too so that the arrangement is stable. This crescent arrangement I'm making is not the classical crescent arrangement. It is called the crescent interpretive arrangement. It is an assymmetrical arrangement and is divided into 3 parts. A part is the bigger end, B part is the smaller end and C part is the center. The selection of materials for this type of arrangement is important because this arrangement is very curvy. Materials with natural curvy lines are a must. That is for fresh flowers. But here, I'm using artificial flowers where the curvy lines are easily created. The first step is to make the A part. As a guide, the length of A is equal to twice the length of container width plus length of container height. I used two stalks of snapdragons and some eucalyptus leaves. Then, I used some green ranunculus to make the B part. The B is 3/4 of A. To make A and B have connectivity, I also inserted 2 stalks of green ranunculus at A. Next, we make the C, the focal area. As this is an all around arrangement, we must not concentrate on one side of the arrangement. The whole arrangement must bebalanced. I used one big white peony and 2 stalks of purple snowballs as the focal flowers. I also added some green berries and beargrass to make the arrangement look more interesting. I added some leaves at the base of the container to make it look fuller. When you're satisfied, your crescent arrangement is done. You can use it to decorate your home and give away as a gift to your friend. It is so easy to make a crescent arrangement once you know the basics.
Pyramid
A pyramid is an arrangement which we seldom see but it actually exists. The base is triangle and is very tall. It can be used as a table centerpiece. Choosing the Right Flowers Is Key to Making a Pyramid Arrangement A pyramid arrangement has very strong features. To define it as a pyramid arrangement, you need flowers that can make up the sides of the pyramid. In this example, I used molucella. Molucella is a long flower and you need to be careful when working with it because it has thorns. So, molucella make up the four sides of this arrangement. To add more volume and weight to the sides, I've added dendrobium orchids. Dendrobium orchids are basically long in nature so it is suitable for this arrangement. At the focal area, I included pink gerberras on all sides. And also green pompoms to compliment it. To further add design to this arrangement, I added curled dracena leaves. That's how I made my pyramid arrangement.
Horizontal
A horizontal arrangement is a low arrangement but the length is usually 2 times the height. A classic horizontal arrangement is symmetrical, which means the length on both sides is the same. Moreover, the placement of flowers is mirrored to the other side. An assymmetrical horizontal arrangement is what we call a horizontal interpretive arrangement. It has more design and character, because the flowers have their own individuality. And because it is assymmetrical, the length on both sides may not be same. Let's Make A Lovely Horizontal Interpretive Arrangement For Your Home A horizontal interpretive arrangement is low in height and long in width. What I am going to make is not the classic horizontal but a horizontal interpretive. The ratio of height to length in a horizontal arrangement is usually 1:4 but not necessary in a horizontal interpretive arrangement. It stands out more in design but is still called a horizontal arrangement as you'll soon see.
What I am going to use for this arrangement are
· white anthuriums
· stargazer lilies
· dracena leaves
· berries
· green dendrobiums
· beargrass
· bird's nest leaves
· pothus leaves
This is a good choice of materials because the texture is varying. To learn more about texture in an arrangement, First, prepare a container. Use a low and shallow container for this type of arrangement. Soak a block of foam and fit it tightly into the container. First, set the height of the arrangement. I use the dracena leaves to make the vertical part. As a guide, the height of the arrangement is the height of the foam plus the length of the container. Remember, this is only a guide. As floral designing is an art, you can experiment with different ideas. Unlike the classic horizontal arrangement, the two sides of the arrangement has equal lengths. But here, I am making the horizontal interpretive. So, it is an assymmetrical arrangement. One side is longer than the other. For one side, I am using the dendrobium orchids. For the other, I use stargazer lilies. I also added some white anthuriums around the center to make it look interesting. And also pothus leaves at the sides. At this point, there is not much colour in the arrangement. So, I added red berries to bring up the bright and fresh colours of white and green. It really made a difference. Now, we don't want to create a two directional arrangement. One is pointing up and one pointing to the side. To connect these two directions, we need to put something in between. So I added the bird's nest leaves there. The leaves are a bit curvy so it will create very nice lines to the arrangement. To further add character to the arrangement, I've added beargrass leaves at the sides, as you can see here. And, you're done. Don't forget to spray water to your horizontal arrangement. It will last longer.
Example of a Horizontal Arrangement
A horizontal arrangement is one of the basic arrangement types. It is a low arrangement and is long horizontally. It is often used as a table centerpiece. Making one is really easy if you know the basics. Below is a horizontal arrangement diagram. If you follow the rules of the diagram, you can make your own arrangement. Here is the measurement guide:A = height of container + width of container + 1 inchB = half of AC = half between A + BFP = about 10 cm from the top of the foam Let's put the theory into practice. For this example, I am using white roses, yellow pompoms and purple asters. I built the skeleton of the arrangement using white roses. When you insert the roses, make sure you remove all the leaves so that it looks clean. When I've inserted the A, B, C and focal point, I inserted the remaining roses in between them. Then, I covered the foam using paku leaves. After I basically covered the foam, I inserted yellow pompoms in between the roses. Some are short and some long, so that it gives depth to the arrangement. Lastly, I inserted purple asters into the empty spots in the arrangement.
You can create your own horizontal arrangement using the flowers you like. But the basics of this arrangement are always the same.
Inverted T
Inverted-T arrangement is in the shape of the letter T, but upside down. It looks like a triangular arrangement but slightly different. A classic inverted T arrangement would be something which has the same type of flowers on all 3 sides. Whereas an inverted T interpretive is an assymmetrical arrangement. The length on one side may be different with the other. Just follow these steps to make an Inverted T arrangement. It is one of the basic arrangement forms of flower arrangement. It looks like the letter T but upside down. Here, I'm making an Inverted T interpretive arrangement. It is slightly more advanced than the classic Inverted T arrangement. A lot of materials with different structure are introduced in this arrangement. They are like the pink ginger, ruscus leaves, tulips, pine leaves, calathea leaves, white pom poms, yellow peacock, paku leaves, yellow limoneum, pink spray carnations and not forgetting stargazer lilies. To make this arrangement, you first must prepare a container. Here, I chose a low container, which is just a glass plate. Soaksome foam and place it on the container. We first take two stalks of pink ginger and insert them horizontally. The height of this is roughly twice the length of the containerplus height of the foam. To show more character, two ruscus leaves are spiralled around the pink gingers. If the leaves do not. Next, let's make the two sides which defines the T shape. For one side, I used calathea leaves and some spray carnations. For the other side, to make it look connected to the other side, I also used some pink spray carnations and three stalks of tulips. Now, the T shape is shaped. To cover the foam, insert short paku leaves. When that's done, we need to build on the center of the T. I used two stargazer lilies on the focal area. I also inserted some pine leaves at the bottom and fill the spaces with white pompoms, yellow limoneum and some yellow peacock. Then, your Inverted T arrangement is done. Easy to do. You should try it.
L shape
As you can guess from the name, an L shaped arrangement has the letter L shape. Although it is not symmetrical, you must know how to position your flowers so that it looks well balanced. An L shape arrangement is obviously in the shape of the letter L. It is also one of the basic arrangement types. This kind of arrangement is usually put on a table to decorate the corner of a room. Making it is easy, but you must follow the diagram below. As a guide, follow these measurements: A = (height of container + width of container) x 2B = 3/4 of AC = 1/4 of AFP = 1/3 of A and is 45 degreesB1 = D = CD = 45 degrees of A and BA1 = 1 inch lower than AA2 = 1 inch lower than A1
Now, I am using purple eustoma as the A, B, C and SD. After I've inserted the eustomas that make the shape of the arrangement, I used paku leaves to cover the foam. As the focal flower, I used red gerberra. I also inserted a few more gerberras at the empty spaces of the arrangement. Some are short and some are long, just so to create dimension to arrangement. Do not insert too many gerberras, because then you'll overshadow the eustomas. Lastly, I inserted white asters as fillers. I inserted them at the remaining gaps in the arrangement. So that's how I made an L shape arrangement. I hope you can try making one using your preferred flowers. For more advanced L shape arrangement, you can try your hands at the L shape interpretive arrangement.
Try Make This L Shape Interpretive Arrangement
The L shape interpretive arrangement originates from the classical L shape arrangement. Because it is an interpretive arrangement, it has more designs and incorporates more lines than the classical form. The L shape interpretive is in the shape of the letter L, and it is assymmetrical. The vertical line can be shorter than the horizontal line and vice versa. Also, the distribution of flowers in an interpretive arrangement is always uneven but done in groupings.The materials I used to make this arrangement are :
· purple dendrobiums
· white dendrobiums
· yellow dendrobiums
· orange dendrobiums
· fatsia leaves
· cypress sticks
· johol leaves
· ferns
When making this arrangement, define the vertical line and horizontal line first. In this arrangement, I used the purple dendrobiums in both vertical and horizontal lines. I also used white dendrobiums to add volume to both the lines. To avoid imbalance between the horizontal and vertical and to also add more lines to the arrangement, I added cypress sticks to the vertical line. The vertical line looks like this... And the horizontal line looks like this...
At the focal area, I used the orange dendrobiums and yellow dendrobiums.
The johol leaves are done in groupings, too. Lastly, I added fatsia leaves at the side bottom of the arrangement. And the result is, a beautiful L shape interpretive arrangement made of colourful orchids.
Fan
The fan arrangement is shaped into a fan. In order to build the fan, you must use flowers with long and strong stems like the gladiolus, ester and others. The fan interpretive is where you get creative at the focal area. You can create any design there, like a Hogarth's Curve, but still maintain the fan shape.
Fan Interpretive Arrangement
I guess you hardly see a fan interpretive arrangement. Here's one example. I made this arangement using pink gerberras, orange gladioulus, white peacocks, white pom poms and some ferns.It is similar to the typical fan arrangement but has more design. In a normal fan arrangement, all the points in the arrangement use the same types of flower. Here, different flowers are used but they compliment each other. Since the top of the fan shape and the base is quite a distance, how to fill the flowers in the middle involves creativity. First, I made the fan frame using orange gladiolus and white peacocks alternatively. Then, I cover up the foam using ferns. In my fan interpretive arrangement, I made the letter S using pink gerberras in the focal area. I also used white pompoms for filling up the empty spaces.This type of arrangement is very rare now, I wonder why. But, it is most suitable for room decoration. The best place to place it is beside a wall because of the flatness at the back of this arrangement.
Triangular
To make a triangular shaped arrangement, position the line flowers to form a triangle. The height of the arrangement should be more than the width.
Oval
An oval arrangement is what I usually do on a funeral stand. But please do not restrict yourself to only making oval arrangements on a funeral stand; you can also decorate your living room with it. It is not a 360 degrees arrangement.
Vertical
The vertical arrangement is a tall arrangement with small width. It can be a classic vertical arrangement or an interpretive vertical arrangement.

coffee and life

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They a- greed it was.The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous 'yes.' The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. 'Now,' said the professor as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things---your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car. The sand is everything else---the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you."Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend time with your children. Spend time with your parents. Visit with grandparents. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first---the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand." One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffeerepresented. teringat pasal satu story...seorang lelaki balik rumah...dia jadi hairan giler..halaman rumah berselerak.. surat di peti pos tak berambil,anak-anak tengah main korek-korek tanah kotor, baju compang camping, penuh dengan tanah dan kotoran rambut tak bersikat, tak bermandi,;;;masuk ke pintu rumah, lagi lelaki tu terkejut...ruang tamu lagi teruk berselerak lelaki itu melaung nama isterinya....sepi tiada jawapan masuk ke dapur..sinki penuh dengan pinggan mangkuk tidak berbasuh,periuk tidak bercuci. mencari apa yang boleh dimakan tetapi tiada makanan yang dimasakmasuk ke bilik air, baju masih belum berbasuh,apatah lagi berendam lelaki itu cemas mencari isterinya..dia bergegas ke tingkat atas, melihat isterinya terbaring di atas katil sedang membaca buku.."awak sakit ke?"..tanya lelaki itu.. "tak lah", jawab isterinya ringkas "kenapa teruk sangat rumah kita hari ni", tanya si suami lagi sambil meletakkan tangan di dahi isterinya, kot-kot isterinya demam... balas isterinya "wahai suamiku, semalam semasa kita bertengkar, abg mengatakan yang saya ini hanyalah seorang suri rumah, duduk di rumah tidak sepenat diri abg yang duduk di pejabat, dan abg sering menanyakan apa kerja yang saya lakukan di rumah yang menyebabkan saya merungut kepenatan kadang-kadang.....NAH, HARI INI SAYA TIDAK MELAKUKAN KERJA-KERJA YANG BIASA SAYA LAKUKAN SETIAP HARI.......

Kalau madame takde kat rumah, alangkah tenteramnya hidup ini. Boleh buat apa yang kita suka. Boleh belengkar kat depan TV tanpa sebarang gangguan mental dah fizikal. Pendek kata,FreeeDoMmmmm lah!! But hairan bin ajaib, when dia betul-betul pergi meaning "She's Gone",aku pulak terasa separuh mati. Sehari dua memanglah shiookkkk, no once shouting from the kitchen for help, no one to komen this and that, no one to criticise. Everything will be smooth... Tapi, masuk hari ketiga, I felt something is missing. Lebih-lebih lagi bila tuala mandi dah berbau 'assshheemmmm', tak tahu mana nak carik yang baru. Colgate gigi dah abis, tak tahu kat mana dia stock up. Air suam dah abis, malas nak boil...Masuk hari ke-4, rindu mula terasa. Eventhough kat office, ramai yang cun melecun, wajahnya yang dah ditatap sejak tarikh bernikah itu juga yang mengetuk pintu hati. Memang lah dia tak se-cun SITI NURHALIZA but the smile yang ikhlas, forever melekat kat hati and sukar ada pengganti. Apabila rindu mencengkam, semuanya jadi tak tentu arah. Tengok TV citer best pun jadik tak best. Nasik bungkus faberite jadik tak faberite. Makan kat 5 star hotel jadik rasa cam makan kat kedai AA. Lebih-lebih lagi bila laundry basket dah makin bertimbun ngan baju kotor, fresh sluar dalam pun dah abis utkdipakai. Toilet dah mula licin berdaki...lantai dah berbelak, tak dimop...Every nite, very the lonely, baring atas katil nengok ceilingblindly... bila lonely gini, baru lah rasa benar kesepian. Jangan kata sebulan atau setahun....belum seminggu isteri takde kat rumah, aku dah terasa separuh pengsan.Bila bersendirian begini,dan terasa malam begitu dingin, barulah kita sedar betapa pentingnya seorang wanita bernama isteri...begitulah isteri kita rasa bila kita tinggalkan dia sendiri malam2 agaknya ya.. So guys out there... jgn buli isteri kita. Kalau boleh, tolong dia buat kerja rumah. Bukan dok depan TV every weekend baca paper. Apa ingat dorang ni sumer kuli ke?! Maid ker?!! Kan dia tu bini kita, best fren kita, sweetheart kita... Ingat duit hantaran yang kita kasik dia masa nikah dulu cukup ker nak bayar gaji dia seumur hidup??!! And furthermore, kan sama2 keja carik rezeki, sama jugak lah buat keja rumah. Kadang2 bila poket kita sesak, tak ingat ker dialah orang yang paling terdekat kita nak kenyeng-kenyeng duit. Tak kesian ker nengok bini kita? Dah ler satu hari keja kat office, balik kena buat keja rumah lagi... penat tau!! Kalau aku lah diberi peluang jadik seorang wanita...tak rela!!! So to all mums and wives out there... life will be meaningless without you.
Bagaimana rasanya sehari tanpa ibu?
I dunno lah anak-anak sekarang,tetapi when i was small, sekiranya emak tiada, semua jadi serba tidak kena!Usahkan seminggu, dua hari sahaja dia tiada dirumah, hidup bagaikan dah tak bermakna. Memanglah, mula-mulanya emak keluar rumah, hati melonjak HAPPINESS!!! Kalau mak tak ada, telinga boleh lega sebab if she's around, for sure 24 hours tak habis-habis berleter.... pottttt peeettt pooott peettttt,boleh pecah eardrums. And if mak menjerit, boleh bergegar isi perut. Silap gaya , tingkap pun boleh tercabut... And if mak takde, BangZaiiiiii!!! MerdeKa!!! FreeDoMmmmmm!!! Can do whatever!!! Boleh main bleyblade sampai senja, boleh tido rumah kawan,boleh chatting sampai nak terkeluar biji bola mata, boleh bergayut kat talipon ngan "dear" sampai subuh and paling shiookkk, boleh ponteng solat!! But, the happiness does not long last. Masuk hari ke-2 dah terasa kehilangan. Sepi betul rasanya bila tak mendengar leteran mak. Rumah jadik sesepi-sepinya cam "haunted village". Pada ketika itulah baru kita sedar bahawa leteran mak yang seperti murai, sebenarnya penyeri rumah.Tanpa leteran itu, semunya seperti MATI... Without mum, hidup ni tak ada cabaran, not challenging, no suspense. Balik kul braper pun, takde orang nak membebel, takde orang nak pulas telinga. Our life graph becomes very the monotenous, then we realised, jari jemari mak yang suka cubit dah memiat telinga rupanya menjadikan hidup lebih bermakna. Pendek kata, biarlah mak membebel sepanjang hari. Biarlah dia menjentik telinga. Tanpanya, hidup tidak berseri dan tak bererti.

There is a magic and wonder about the stars and many of us are familiar with the phrase ‘wish upon a star’. What would you wish for right now? If you were to wish for it, would you believe it could ever come true? I wanted to share with you the magic I have experienced by focusing on The Star card when it has come up in my readings. Wishing upon a star is at the heart of The Star card’s meaning. It is a card of optimism, hope and unexpected gifts. When this magical card comes up in a reading for you it heralds a time of more positive opportunities and happy outcomes. This is Serious! This incident happened recently in North Texas . A woman went boating one Sunday taking with her some cans of coke which she put into the refrigerator of the boat. On Monday she was taken to the hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. She died on Wednesday. The autopsy concluded she died of Leptospirosis. This was traced to the can of coke she drank from, not using a glass. Tests showed that the can was infected by dried rat urine and hence the disease Leptospirosis. Rat urine contains toxic and deathly substances. It is highly recommended to thoroughly wash the upper part of all soda cans before drinking out of them. The cans are typically stocked in warehouses and transported straight to the shops without being cleaned.. A study at NYCU showed that the tops of all soda cans are more contaminated than public toilets (i..e).. full of germs and bacteria. So wash them with water before putting them to the mouth to avoid any kind of fatal accident.

Mum’s Final Examination in This Life母亲生前最后一场考试
As my mum had gone through a tough life with her eldest son and my grandmother back in the homeland of China for many years, she was easily contented with a simple lifestyle in this country and in this town of Nibong Tebal. She always reminded us ‘to be thankful to the Heavenly Father and the Motherly Earth’ [谢天谢地] for what we had; three meals a day with a shelter to be dwelt in. She did not crave for material needs. She only aspired for spiritual uplifting without her own awareness.Her lifestyle was simple. She rarely bought or ate outside food. Whatever money she could save would be kept for praying purposes. Realizing the good intent and purpose of my mother, my eldest brother did not object to my mother’s religious practice. She was given a free hand to get money from the drawer at her whims to purchase items essential for praying.Her daily practice was the reciting of the sacred name of Kwan Yin[观音圣号] with beads as a means of recorder. When she had made up the number of one hundred and sixty thousand times the recitation of the sacred name of Kwan Yin, she would get my sister and me to help her fill up the one hundred and sixty dots with red ink on a sailing ship commonly known as ‘Buddha Ship’ [佛船] printed on a piece of yellow paper. We were very obliging to do it for her as we regarded it as a plaything to have fun with. Before the ship was set sailed to Western Paradise by means of burning it, she would make a wish as an attachment either for our financial condition to be improved or for the academic performance of her children to be excellent. Rarely would she make a wish for her own well being.On certain days of every lunar month she would observe strictly vegetarian diet. Sometimes we would join her just for a change of appetite.Whenever any of her children were to leave home for travel or for study elsewhere, he or she would be reminded by my mum to burn joss-sticks to acknowledge the deities and ancestors and at the same time to ask for their blessings.Though she was an illiterate, she was determined to learn by rote the recitation of a Kwan Yin Sutra [高王观世音经] from me and from my sister when I was at Standard 4 and my sister was at Standard 5. We were too happy and too willing to be her tutors as it was chance of a life time for us as kids to act as ‘teachers of somebody else’.During the last three years of her life, when I got my transfer back to Nibong Tebal, I did observe that every morning she would spend an hour or so kneeling in front of the altar of the Buddha statue on the upstairs of our house, reciting the Kwan Yin Sutra she learnt from us.Thrice a year her friends would join her in the pilgrimage to a Penang temple of Seong Woon Aum [祥云庵] during the special occasions of celebration in the name of Kuan Yin. Her friends would assemble at our house and collectively they would hire one or two taxis to Butterworth. From there they took a ferry across the sea to board a bus to the temple at Ayer Itam. This she did without fail for many years ever since we were small. As her children, we were very delighted to wait for her home coming after each pilgrimage as we anticipated many special things to eat, like various types of fruits, dumplings, vegetarian dishes, and so on.In the year 1983, she already made arrangements in anticipation of her upcoming death. After she had opted for cremation, she asked me to go to Beow Hiang Lim Temple[妙香林寺] at Air Hitam of Penang on July 9, 1983 to book an urn niche at a price of RM 2000 with her own money. She bought gold rings from the local pawnshop to be given to her children for their lifetime remembrance. In 1984, when she learnt of my booking of a house at Bukit Mertajam, she gave me one thousand ringgit Malaysia as part of the booking fee. After that she practically left nothing behind.Three months before her death, she was diagnosed by a doctor at Penang Adventist Hospital to suffer from leukemia. The doctor advised me to bring her home so that she might spend her last days in peace and dignity. Dr. Khoo Hock Lye of Khoo Clinic at Nibong Tebal was very kind indeed. He attended to my mum immediately on request to give her injection of morphine whenever she was having an acute pain. We were very thankful to him for his professional ethics.During her last days, I was told by my mum that she never had any unpleasant dream or illusion of any kind or ‘any uninvited visitors’ from the other world. This was a good indication that she was not disturbed by beings from other realms.Early in the morning of December 13, 1984, my mum enquired from my sister-in-law about the time at that instant. She was told that the time was approximately 4.00 am. Mum sounded that it was still too early then to telephone my sister and me. It could be that she wanted to inform us to be back with her before she departed. But on further query by my sister-in-law as to why she wanted to contact us, she said that there was nothing important to be mentioned.At around 5.00 am, prior to her demise, my two nieces and a nephew, namely, Phuay Yin, Phuay Sunn and Sip Hin respectively, gathered in front of the altar of Buddha which was about 25 feet away from my mum’s sickbed to recite continuously the sacred name of Amitabha Buddha[阿弥陀佛圣号] to transfer merits to their grandma. All the while my mum was lying on her bed. At around 6.00 am, she sat up on an arm chair by the side of her bed. Her grandchildren, sensing that the time was up for their grandma, instead of crying, continued to recite the sacred name of Amitabha Buddha in front of their grandma, while at the same time trying to conceal the grief of nearly losing their beloved grandma. Minutes before my mum passed away, she asked her grandson, Sip Hin, to burn joss-sticks to pray to the Buddha, the deities and the ancestors to make known to them that she was about to leave this world. It was with such a good grace and dignity that she departed this world. Hopefully with this nonstop recitation of the sacred name of Amitabha Buddha by my nephew and nieces, my mum would have set sail in a Buddha ship[佛船] to the other shore of Western Paradise. I felt terribly sorry for not be able to be at her bedside at that crucial moment of her departure when she needed me most. I am still deeply indebted to my nephew and nieces for their good karma in their handling and sending off my mum in the most professional way. Hope they will be blessed by their grandma with forever good fortune, good health and good luck.How well a person lives is determined not by how comfortable or luxurious he had lived through his life but by the relative ease with which he is leaving this world for the next.A perfect death which every Buddhist yearns for at the time of death includes the following criteria:a) can anticipate when to leave for the next world[预知时至].b) has no bodily suffering[身无病苦],c) has no attachment to worldly pleasure[心不贪恋],d) has a clarity of thoughts and conscious mind before death[意不颠倒],Death is the final examination of every person. Anybody who can die gracefully with all the criteria mentioned above will have a perfect score in the report card of his life’s final examination.In the case of my mum, though she was short of perfect score for having bodily suffering, I would say she had attained quite a good grade by what she had done in this life and how she left this world. Practically she had fulfilled most of the criteria mentioned. She had set a good example for most of us to emulate. I am proud to have her as my beloved mother. She was a common mother with uncommon deeds.

Bagi kami yang menumpang di bumi UAE, rasa bertuah untuk bernaung di bawah seorang Perdana Menteri yang terserlah ketokohan dalam dunia Arab yang penuh dengan kacau-bilau.
Perdana Menteri yang tidak berkata, ‘bekerja dengan saya bukan untuk saya’ atau bersajak ‘mencari mana dia ghazali shafie’, tidak tidur dalam mesyuarat atau majlis, dan tidak juga memperkenalkan mazhab baru. Perdana Menteri berwajah garang yang berkarisma tinggi ini kuat bekerja, selain penyair hebat, aktif dalam sukan hingga ke peringkat dunia, beliau berjaya menguruskan ekonomi dan pembangunan negara dengan cekap.Itulah Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum yang dilantik sebagai Naib Presiden dan Perdana Menteri UAE dua tahun lalu (5 Januari 2006).Walaupun UAE bukan sebuah negara demokrasi berparlimen, namun beliau jauh lebih baik dari perdana menteri yang menang besar melalui pilihanraya yang tidak bersih, bebas, telus dan terbuka.

Beliau yang turut dikenali dengan nama Sheikh Mo, telah membuktikan kemampuan sebagai Putera Mahkota Dubai dan de facto Emir Dubai sejak Januari 1995 sepanjang aruah abangnya, Sheikh Maktoum menjadi Naib Presiden dan Perdana Menteri UAE.Beliau mempunyai dua orang isteri. DIC terbina dalam masa setahun dan dalam tahun 2001, perdana menteri Malaysia ketika itu yang terhidu kegagalan MSC dan Cyberjaya berbanding DIC walau lebih awal dibangunkan, datang membuat lawatan selama sehari.

Kini dengan perubahan drastik dan ketara meliputi pelbagai sektor, Sheikh Mo muncul sebagai ikon dan idola baru generasi semasa yang memberi inspirasi.
Begitupun, walau kami yang sudah cukup kagum melihat perubahan luar biasa Dubai sejak sedekad, beliau sentiasa menegaskan yang pembangunan Dubai ketika ini hanyalah 10% dari wawasannya!Sheikh Mo turut menyumbang berbilion dollar ke arah kebajikan seperti USD10 bilion dari poket sendiri untuk memajukan pendidikan dan keilmuan dunia Arab dan Islam.
Inisiatif seperti Dubai Cares memberi peluang kepada 1 juta kanak-kanak miskin seluruh dunia untuk mendapat pendidikan yang baik.Kepimpinan Sheikh Mo berjaya mengubah bukan sahaja lanskap gurun dan teluk Arab, tetapi juga mentaliti dan sikap rakyat tempatan terhadap peluang yang ada.Warga emirati yang hanya dalam 10 peratus dari jumlah penduduk mempunyai pendapatan per kapita tertinggi di dunia.Beliau suka membuat lawatan mengejut bila-bila masa sahaja. Dengan kuasa yang ada padanya, beliau boleh membuang, menukar dan menaik pangkat kakitangan kerajaan mengikut prestasi.Sempena tahun 2008, untuk membantu dari kesan inflasi dan kos hidup yang memang tinggi, beliau menaikkan gaji kakitangan kerajaan sehingga 70%.
Ketika ini UAE masih lagi bebas cukai buat semua rakyat, penduduk lain dan syarikat yang beroperasi.Begitupun matawang Dirham terjejas dengan kejatuhan Dollar kerana Dirham ditambatkan kepada Dollar.Corak kepimpinan hands-on menjadikan beliau amat digeruni.
Sejak menjadi perdana menteri, bukan sahaja meneruskan lawatan mengejutnya ke merata pelusuk tanah UAE, malah membawa jemaah kabinetnya bermesyuarat di serata lokasi luar kota.Keprihatinannya terhadap rakyat sendiri dibuktikan dengan siri projek segera seperti pembinaan puluhan ribu vila untuk mereka yang tidak mampu.Sekurang-kurangnya kekayaan hasil negara dikongsi bersama rakyat dengan sebaiknya melalui pelbagai program berfaedah seperti pendidikan dan perumahan.Dengan membariskan kepimpinan peringkat nasional yang muda, berwibawa, berkualiti dan sama kuat bekerja, Sheikh Mo memastikan segala yang dirancangkan menepati sasaran.Ahli kabinetnya, selain dari keluarga diraja Abu Dhabi yang berpengaruh dan abangnya, adalah dari rakyat biasa golongan profesional.Bukan tidak ada kesukaran, kelemahan dan kegagalan, mahupun cabaran lain seperti persaingan tradisional antara kabilah dan emiriyah yang autonomi, apalagi politik sesama keluarga sheikh, namun yang pasti bagi saya sebagai ekspatriat yang menumpang rezeki dan rahmat sejak hampir sedekad lalu, sesungguhnya Dubai dan UAE umumnya amat bertuah mempunyai seorang perdana menteri yang cemerlang, emilang dan terbilang!
